Counterspace at White Star Market

If you have spent any time with me, you know that I have a very powerful sweet tooth. So, it was no surprise when I was, perhaps entirely too, excited by the discovery of Counterspace at White Star Market. Their stacks of sweets piled high immediately drew my eye as I entered the market’s double doors.

I must admit it was a little strange to see stacks of cookies and macarons without any kind of covering, but any pile of sweets is ok with me. Some of the items were kept under a cloche, but others were left sitting exposed to the air. I assume that the people working the counter are on the lookout for errant sneezers and those who like to poke things before buying them.20180927_1222224505958696672787353.jpg

I was impressed by the beauty of the bevy of baked goods when I first approached the counter. I was excited to try something new, so I gave the tahini whoopie pie a shot. Of the two items I have tried, I preferred this one. It was a little dry; however, it was exactly sweet as I would have liked, and the tahini adds nuttiness and just a hint of bitterness to balance out the sweetness of the frosting and chocolate.

On my other trip to the counter, I tried a slice of the confetti cake. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed, after I saw how beautifully decorated the cakes were. I had hoped for a transcendent treat experience, instead it was a dry sponge coated in a frosting that verges on cloying. The flavor of the cake was nice, but I had a hard time getting past the dryness and the overpowering sweetness of the frosting. Perhaps a big glass of milk would have been the remedy for  all of this cake’s ailments.

While I am not a professional baker, I find it likely that there is some problem in the production process, since both things I tried were dry. It seems that they may have been over baked, or perhaps left out too long while waiting to be iced.

I desperately wanted to love Counterspace, but the dryness of the baked goods left a lot to be desired. I will almost certainly give them another shot in future, but it will probably won’t be for a while and not if it is too far out of my way.
